Resourceful in building shelter and/or coordinating efforts. Could raise funds to travel probably but any help appreciated. College educated, 26 years old, very physically fit, and experienced in hands on type of work as well as project coordination/leadership roles. Also strong in crisis. My name is David Brown, 43, from Sydney Aust. I have my own electrical contracting business that can be left and run by my staff.

I'm finding it a little frustrating that people with obvious skills such as all of us who have offered here cannot be utilised by some of the NGO aid operations. But that's by the by.

I will pay my way in full and even if there is no call for people with my skills, I'd be more than willing to assist a doctor, nurse, water/sanitation engineer or anyone else who has skills so desperately needed in Aceh.

I'm thinking of going to Jakarta next Monday January 10th and try to hook up with a relief organisation over there. If anyone is looking for an assistant and would like to try the same thing, by all means call me 0425 254 255.

AUSSIES WHO WANT TO HELP BUT CAN'T GET ANY INFO

My name is Dave Brown from Sydney. I've already posted offering help but had another idea. I'm thinking about just going over to Jakarta next Monday and seeing what can be done once I hit the ground.

Is there anyone else who is thinking the same thing? A group of say 6-8 people with a range of skills would have to be useful to someone, somewhere. It would also be some form of comfort to know that we were a part of a team and could look out for one another.

I'm an electrician with reasonable all round skills. What about some medical and engineering volunteers? And maybe someone who can speak Indonesian? :)

My rationale is that even if I got turned away, I could just pop over to Bali for a holiday knowing I tried my best to help. At least I'd be putting $$$ into the economy.

Hi my name is Martin Darke, i live in Worcester, England and i'm 30 years of age. I have donated as much money as i possible can at the moment to the tsunami appeal but i want to do much more than this if possible. Myself and my partner wendy are also setting up a sponsored cycle ride around the whole circomference of Australia, if anyone would like to be involved, offer support or have any advice to give then please get intouch, asap.

Hi,
I am looking for ways to help out in a hands-on way in the areas affected by the tsunamis. I see many others are too. Looks like the official line from most agencies is that they prefer to use their own people etc, which is understandable, but I cannot believe that if capable people show up, they cannot do something useful. I have no idea if anyone is reading this who is in a position to act on it, but anyway, I am able to get myself to the area at fairly short notice and stay for about 3 to 6 months. Maybe longer. I'm 46, fit, and have various applicable skills. As a professional environmental scientist, those in the areas of water supply, groundwater, water contamination, geomorphology, ecology etc may be most applicable. But I don't mind doing anything. I've travelled extensively in Africa and am fine with primitive living. I like getting my hands dirty, seeing results, and working with like-minded people. I also like the idea of linking up with others who want to help in this way. Maybe a group small group of us with complimentary skills could team up and focus on a small area? I am in eastern Canada.
email me at robert.hughes@gnb.ca.
