Phuket, Thailand: Milk needed for tsunami kids

A charity daycare center in Bang Muang (Phuket, Thailand) has appealed for donations of milk for small children. The “Nice Care Center” behind the Tambon Administration Organization in Baan Bang Muang, near Baan Nam Kem, is run by the Duang Pratheep Foundation in Bangkok.

Coordinator Rojana Phraesrithong explained that the daycare center looks after more than 150 children as their parents struggle to make a living. Some children stay overnight and at weekends if both parents are out fishing.

K. Rojana explained that, immediately after December’s disaster, many people donated milk and other necessities but now, with fewer people visiting the camp, supplies are running low.

“The center has more than 150 children, aged from three to 18 years old. The little ones need pasteurized, sterilized or powdered milk,” she said.

Food For Life Global is currently looking for a qualified Art Therapist to volunteer at Gokulam – Bhaktivedanta Children’s Home in Sri Lanka.

Food For Life Global was so impressed by the level of care at Gokulam, that we have sponsored the home and are working to raise funds that are desperately needed due to the 100 tsunami orphans arriving currently.

On top of traditional fundraising we are also creating a whole new venture: Children Of The Tsunami – Arts, Gifts, and Education. COTTAGE will be a line of greeting cards designed with the art work of the children, with all proceeds going to the Children’s Home. COTTAGE is a project intended to financially support the children of Gokulam, to raise awareness about the Home and to provide the children with an artistic outlet. We hope to facilitate creative art therapy for the orphans, enabling them to express themselves in a unique way.

We’re open to any ideas or proposals, but are hoping for a two or three week project. FFL will provide housing, meals, and all art supplies needed.

Survey carried out by paola dm, tsunami help volunteer
in Phuket

I carried out a survey of my local neighborhood this weekend.

Here the situation is much less dramatic than in other areas, I hear, like
India and Sri Lanka for example. Basic needs are met, and is just a question of getting people back to their lifes.

In Phanga Provence up north people are still living in tents and although massive relief operations are in place, there is little 'on the ground' information of who they are and what exactly they need, so that people can help them directly

I can try to go to Phanga over the next couple of weeks, but if some volunteers are already there please post the info and spare me the journey.

By providing some basic data I hope donors who are wondering 'how can I help'
can get involved directly, and to encourage more field reports from other areas to be posted.

Similar granular data of people in other countries may be useful

Some small shops have started trading, although there are very few shoppers around, some have plans to do so within a few months and some have the means to get back to work, in the hope that life may go back to normal.

A few others still live in tents here too, although the only way to find out is to survey the areas in person.

Any donors, persons or entities interested in helping out any of the families below, kindly post a comment to this notice, so that others may keep track of whos getting what and decide to allocate their help accordingly

Please note that residents and shop keepers beach side may be asked to move
at the end of the season due to govenrment plans to rationalise (and protect from exploiteation?) the area

SUMMARY

Nai Yang beach lies a few kms south of Phuket airport
Only nine people died in this location, over a hundred injured, but many many missing.

It has been the home of many small businesses and a only a couple of larger hotels
beacause it is near a national park protected area

Currently there are plans to move the small businesses away from the beach, so many discussions are taking place between some stalls owners and the government

I started my survey of needs at the southmost tip of the beach, and walked my way north to check out the situation, as this is the best that I can do for my neighborhood

I asked the following questions to the residents who were there at the time of my visit name of business and type of activity damage suffered help received from government and other sources plans for the future resources needed to start again

This is a small family restaurant, (I was a regular there)
Their entire house and business has been completely wiped out, together with ALL their
belongings.

The family of three however is resourceful and happy to be alive
They found sufficient resources withing family and friends, in five days they have rebuilt a small house
and are planning to set up a new kitchen and open their small restaurant again

They say they have received the following financial assistance so far

2000 thai baht for loss of employment
15.000 +20.000 compensation for damage to property

they received contributions in kind from friends and relatives
to build their home equal to 120.000

they plan to open again april or october

they need to build the kitchen and buy all restaurant equipement

An Urgent Appeal For Clothes From The Commanding Officer Of Jaffna - Sri Lanka

Last night I received a call on my cell phone from Major S.R. Tirumavithane, who is the Commanding Officer in the North of Sri Lanka from the 4th Gemmunu Watch. He said that 2 of his battalions (no longer active but stationary) were hit hard by the Tsunami on Dec 26th, and they've lost everything they had.

He's been feeding the people with dry rations but is urgently appealing for clothes - adult sized ones. Major S.R. Tirumavithaneis appealing to anyone who can clothe the people in 2 of his batalions (400 people/batallion), he also said that he can give full Sri Lanka Airforce clearance for the clothes coming by plane. The Commanding Officer for the North of Sri Lanka can be reached on +94 0212264155

Meanwhile i've found out that theres a person named - Patrick Perera who's working closely with the STF to transport and distribute supplies primarily to the East of Sri Lanka. At the moment they are supplying to the coastal areas between Pandirippu and Panama. They currently have around eleven large trucks for transportationof goods and personnel on the ground to assist with distribution. They should also be able to provide assistance moving areas to other parts of the island as well.

Also Expo Air have offered free flights for this tsunami crisis:

Conditions of carriage:

* Expo Air is only responsible for loading, transportation and unloading of all relief cargo to an from aircraft
* Carriage of ONLY essential relief goods
* Each shipment should be 10,000 kgs (8 tonnes)
* All trucks carrying cargo MUST be weighed and certified of the weight from a weighbridge.
* Shipper's representative shall accompany their cargo and de dropped off at destination.

Flight Schedule - All flights will commence from Ratmalana Airport

* 2 x flights daily to Ampara at 06:00 & 06:15 hrs
* 1 x flight daily to Wirawila at 08:30 hrs
* 1 x flight daily to Batticaloa at 11:00 hrs
* 1 x flight daily to Jaffna at 13:30 hrs

We are surveying the local community for mid term needs.

Most fishermen living on the west coast which was affected by the Tsunami have lost part, or most of their equipment.

I am aiming at making a list, but any well intentioned donors could perhaps start organising the operation, I am estimating up to a hundred on this island

Ideally, volunteers interested in helping with this project would coordinate with International Fishermen Associations and local representatives as they can help 'rationalise ' the effort so that help is distributed equally around individuals based on their existing condition, extent of the losses and economic need

Fish is indeed becoming more expensive around here and currently most supply is imported

The fishernmen of this village, who survived the tsunami onslaught, are restless to return to the sea for earning a living instead of staying in relief camps.

"Give us boats and fishing nets. We want to go to the sea and earn livelihood on our own. For how many more days should we stand in such queues waiting for food and water?" says Mayyalakan, a fisherman.

Party in the Middle East to raise relief funds for Tsunami Victims:

A major event is to be held on Thursday 13th January 2005 in Bahrain to raise funds for the tens of thousands killed in the Tsunami that obliterated much of the coastline of South East Asia last week. The idea was spawned by Radio Bahrain personality Krazy Kevin, whose frequent messages of sympathy for victims over the airwaves sparked himself and the vocally talented Jo Lincoln to form a committee to host a major fundraiser.

Under the umbrella of the newly named ‘Tsunami Relief Fund’, the event, ’Hands Across the Water” will be held at the Diplomat Radisson SAS (Bahrain), in their Grand Ballroom. The hotel has kindly offered its services and staff free of charge for this event.

Many of Bahrain’s societies and prestigious companies have come together to help organise the event, which will almost certainly raise a generous amount of money, 100% of which will be sent to those affected by the disaster through the international charity organisation DEC (Disaster Emergency Committee), an independent body which distributes funds evenly to people displaced by tragedies such as the tsunami.

The fundraiser will be from 2pm to 12am (midnight), with the hours between 2pm-5pm being allocated for families, and many exciting events for the whole family will be available, such as a bouncy castle, face painting and much more. 6pm to 12am (midnight) will be for adults only, where some of Bahrain’s local talented bands have offered to entertain visitors. In addition, there will be raffles with great prizes throughout the day kindly donated by Bahrain’s local companies.

Entrance tickets are BD3 ($8-USD) for adults & BD1 ($2.65-USD) for children.

Psychological Intervention for Disaster Victims - Volunteers Needed

Urgent Appeal for Volunteer Expertise in Psychological Intervention:

Dear friends,
We have received an appeal from the Center for Psychology in Malaysia for professional trainers/psychologists in the area of psychological crisis & disaster intervention (including crisis counseling, psychological trauma support, disaster intervention, disaster psychology). These would be people who would be willing to volunteer their time for about a week or more in Malaysia.

The immediate goal is to equip teams in Malaysia interested in helping in short-term psychological relief efforts for thousands of children and adults in areas most badly affected by the tsunami i.e. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and India.
The long-term goal is to explore ways to sustain psychological relief work in the above areas.

The Center is exploring the following possibilities for input from experts from the United States:
1. training Malaysian practitioners on how to train paraprofessionals, aid workers and volunteers in providing immediate psychological support to tsunami victims. (3-4 day training)
2. an introductory training to aid workers and volunteers already going or considering going to the affected areas (half-day training)
3. facilitating a seminar on exploring ways in helping rebuild the mental health infrastructure, community capacity-building, and the reconstruction of individual well-being in the affected areas (one-day seminar)

This request is still at the proposal stage. However, the Center will fund transportation and accommodation costs for 2 -3 experts.
Ideally, we are looking for American experts already in the region of South Asia. Having worked with people in Asia would be a plus. The training provided needs to keep in mind the geographical and cultural aspects of the affected region.

The center has received multiple requests to help in the manner of crisis counseling, but there is very limited resources and expertise to turn to in Malaysia itself. Any ideas you may have in dealing with this massive tragedy is welcomed at this stage. Finally, if you know of funding agencies willing to provide funds for mental health efforts in these affected areas, please let us know.

Registration does not guarantee a position on the FFL Relief Team. We must assess your qualifications and match them to the needs on the ground. You will be contacted within 7 days of your registration. Please note the following information and prerequisites:

You will need to take care of all visa requirements, travel and immunization shots (Cholera, Typhoid, Hep A & B). VegTravel has agreed to temporarily provide wholesale travel discounts for all bonafide FFL volunteers. You must have a return ticket. Volunteers will be picked up at the airport in Colombo, and after a rest, driven to the distribution sites about 10 - 12 hours away. We would ideally like all selected volunteers to be able to arrive on January 15th.

We would like all volunteers to understand that at this time, Food for Life is concentrating on food relief and that conditions are austere. Understand, there may be delays and obstacles along the way. You may be asked to do very simple tasks like cutting up vegetables and cleaning.

Tsunami Technology Help Needed (Hardware & Volunteers)

$ 4 billion has been pledged to provide for basic needs, in the meantime the is NO organised way of information gathering at this stage because of the nature of the calamity and understandably so.

I am volunteering to set up a team of tech guys to go to South Asia and setup database systems so that decison makers can have a pool to log into and get info at the click of the mouse. At this stage it makes much sense for all efforts to provide the basics , clean and safe water , medicines ,food and shelter. But you will realise that for this to be implemented effectively over time , a sound info system must be put in place so that decision makers know what to send where.

All we will be looking for are people to sponsor us specifically with the following so that we can donate our tech skills for some us who are unemployed BUT want to help.

(i)Desktop Computers - to setup database system.
(iiLaptops - to use on field trips to collect data.
(iii)Tech Volunteers - geeks prepared to go in South Asia and implement these systems.

We managed to get software from Linux and Microsoft distributors and are OK to this end.

Volunteers are needed to work on a committee to organize the event. Help rebuild Kosgoda in Sri Lanka

We, like many people, are wary of giving money to a government-run fund (subject to corruption and agendas) or even a huge relief organization, not knowing how the money will be used or where it's making an impact. We think that by focusing on a small part of the affected area, we can efficiently give assistance to people when and how it's needed, and not be overwhelmed by the sheer faceless numbers that we see in the media.

We want to help Kosgoda because we know these people, and we know what they need to rebuild their town and their lives. International Mission Board (IMB) - Volunteers Needed for Indonesia

Dozens of people and organizations have contacted our IMB office in Jakarta, asking if they can help. The answer is a qualified YES! At this point, assessment teams are just now being able to enter the afflicted areas. Once they have reported back we believe that we will need volunteers to enter this area.

Specifically, we are looking for three types of volunteers:

1) Those who have prior training in disaster relief, (e.g. - State Convention Baptist Disaster Relief teams), 2)medical personnel, and 3) those with expertise in water purification. If you have medical training, please consider coming on a rapid response emergency medical volunteer team.

We are specifically looking for Doctors, Surgeons, Nurses, Paramedics/EMT?s, and Pharmacists. Our goal is to have the first medical teams ready to enter some of the worst hit areas within two weeks. At this time, we are only seeking preliminary information to see who is interested in coming and/or in coordinating one of these medical teams. We will probably need volunteer teams to come into this area over the next few months. We have reports that hundreds of doctors are needed in Banda Aceh (the capital of Aceh province) alone.

Volunteers need to be in good health, have their passports current, be able to take off for a week to ten days on short notice and must be willing to work in very difficult areas. Literally tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people are in desperate need of medical care and are not receiving it. This tragedy can be a great opportunity for the people of God to show His love to a dying world.

If you are interested, you can contact Dr. Charles Cole at the Jakarta office of the IMB, Dr. Jim Brown (the coordinator of IMB World Hunger/Disaster Relief) or the Volunteers in Missions dept. at the IMB. We know that many of you who may not have medical or disaster training, may want to come as volunteers, however it is highly unlikely that we would gain permission for you to enter this area. Considering large number of small children orphaned by the tsunamiin Southern Sri Lanka the California based non profit corporation Insight Mission Society is raising a fund to build an orphanage in Southern Sri Lanka , the Society's Secretary Walter Jayawardhana told the media.

The Society President Venerable Pallebage Chandrasiri Thero said, at least US $ 30, 000 is necessary for the project.

Jayawardhana said the Society is trying to obtain a piece of land from a private donor, close to Matara, away from the sea for the Society to put up buildings. Any interested donor should contact Jayawardhana at the phone number appearing below.

Volunteers needed in South India to help tsunami victims

A group of non-governmental organization, the Tsunami-South India NGO Coordination Cell, is currently recruiting volunteers to help with relief operations in South India.

The group is urgently needs Tamil-speaking volunteers to:

1. Manage the central stores in each zone, supervise packing of relief kits and assist the programme team in documentation; 2. Village-level workers to help in enumeration (keeping track of people in need of relief packages), relief kit packing, distribution and recording; 3.Work as counselors in villages.

The Tsunami-South India NGO Coordination Cell is working with 21 local NGOs in seven affected districts -- Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Kanyakumari, and Karaikkal. Relief is being provided to more than 16,000 families.

Speaking for the alliance, Dr Jacob Dharamaraj, Coordinator of the Cell said, "Ours is an informal alliance striving to make a dynamic change in the disaster-torn parts of South India. Staff and volunteers have been tirelessly working long days to set into place plans,
strategies, donations and volunteers to initiate relief, encouragement and a stable return to normality."

As you all know, right now things are still very chaotic here. The Sri
Lankan government and the various responding agencies are still assessing
the extent of the damage and devising their long-term recovery and
reconstruction plans.

In response to the overwhelming offers of assistance, the Center for
National Operations, the Sri Lankan Government entity coordinating the
response, relief and recovery efforts, has approved the creation of
VolunteerSriLanka.org (VSL), to help match volunteers with organizations
responding to the disaster in Sri Lanka.

VSL will have a two-fold operational agenda. The first will be a volunteer
help desk to be set up at Bandaranaike International Airport. Volunteers
arriving in Sri Lanka will be able to register at the new VSL help desk.
The information provided will be made available to the major multinational
aid agencies, the major international NGOs and the bilateral aid programs.
However, our primary focus will be the 13,000 small local NGOs operating in
Sri Lanka – those in greatest need of assistance and with the least amount
of resources.

If you have already been placed by VSL, information will be available at the
airport concerning how to contact your sponsoring organization.

The second operational agenda for VSL will be the establishment of a website
that will allow volunteers to visit our website and register online, letting
us know their respective skills, experience, and other pertinent
information. You will also be able to find current information on the
situation in Sri Lanka, health and safety tips, travel suggestions, etc. We
hope to have our website available by Wednesday, January 12.

As soon as our website is ready we will be sending out another e-mail
announcing the launch and inviting everyone who has expressed interest thus
far to visit the website and register.

Among those affected by the Tsunamis in Asia are tens of thousands of pregnant and nursing women. Like all expectant mothers, these women need adequate nutrition and access to vitamins, medicines and antenatal care to deliver safely. Even in the best of circumstances, more than 15 per cent of these women would need emergency obstetric care. The trauma caused by the earthquake and tsunamis could push this risk even higher.

In the wake of the disaster, UNFPA is working with partners to assess immediate needs and to supply life-saving medicines and supplies to enable pregnant women to deliver safely. Other UNFPA include emergency obstetric care and the establishment of temporary health facilities.

A team of health care workers from International Medical Corps (IMC) is now in Aceh to respond to the immediate impact of this disaster. In coordination with local partners and other relief agencies, IMC plans to:

* Conduct mobile clinics with outreach to affected populations
* Secure supplies of clean drinking water
* Distribute hygiene and sanitation kits
* Distribute food
* Provide psychosocial counseling and support to individuals and families
* Provide generators for temporary shelters and health posts/facilities

The world is focused on the South Asia disaster, and the death tolls from Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia are mounting by the hour. Virtually no information or first-hand accounts have come out of Burma, however.

Nonetheless, a quick look at the map shows that southern Burma had to be terribly affected by the tsunami (some good additional maps can be found at Relief Web). The Burmese islands and coastline around the Andaman Sea are just slightly north of the Thai resort of Phuket, which was devastated. In that area of Burma, a unique seafaring people known as the Sea Gypsies (Salone, or Moken) have lived simple lives dependent on fishing for centuries. Their lives will never be the same.

The Foundation for the People of Burma needs your help. Our medical team will be in the affected area next month. With your help, we can alleviate some of the suffering that has resulted from this disaster. This is from Voluntary Health Association of Kanyakumari, VHAK, an NGO working among children, adolescents, women, youth and grownups in Kanyakumari district since 1994. Since then, it has formed and strengthened more than 7,000 neighbourhood parliaments among these groups.

The tsunami that occurred on December 26, 2004 has devastated many coastal villages in Kanyakumari district. The villages Collachel, Kottilpadu, Manakudy, Alikal, Pillaithope, Muttom and Kanyakumari are the most affected villages in this district. The entire village of Kottilpadu, Pillaithope and Alikal have been washed out. The people themselves are involved in removing the dead bodies and helping the people find out their loved ones both alive and dead. In Muttom Parish almost 365 houses were washed out, 42 bodies recovered, 20 more missing and a loss of 12 crores. In Colachel, Kottilpadu village the death toll is still rising. There is very less involvement from the Government be it in removing the debris or recovering the bodies from the rubble.

The children’s parliaments that functioned in the coastal villages have either lost their precious members or the members have lost their parents and become orphans. Almost 70 % of the dead were children.

The district administration is not well-equipped and trained to cope with this sort of calamities. As a result, they are in a state of stalemate whereupon they do not know what to do. It is the NGOs who are working hard to do some relief activities among the affected people. VHAK is one among them.

At present, on a short term basis, the staff and the volunteers of VHAK, numbering more than 500 would like to involve in undertaking emergency relief measures like medical help, supply food and clothing and temporary shelters.

Sarvodaya response to the national calamity: Tsunami hits Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka was hit by a massive tsunami on December 26 around 8 am, caused by an earthquake in Indonesia (9.0 magnitude on the Richter scale).

More than 22,000 people are feared to have died (as of 12/29/04), but the estimates could go even higher as updates come in. More than 1 million are displaced or homeless. This is the biggest natural disaster to hit Sri Lanka in recent history. This particular wave came up slowly, rising sixteen times during the day, causing most of the destruction as it receded back into the ocean.

Sri Lanka had a three-day holiday weekend and many people had been visiting relatives or had taken a trip to the beach. It is therefore even more challenging to determine the full impact of the tsunami, since thousands of people are missing, unaccounted for or far from home. December being peak tourist season for Sri Lanka an unknown number of foreign tourists have been affected.

Communication is presently difficult to impossible. Getting an accurate assessment of the devastation’s extent is difficult. Phone landlines and mobile phone connections are virtually non-existent in many parts of the country and the electricity supply has been cut off. Even police and rescue teams cannot reach many affected areas. Rumours are spreading and misinformation is becoming rampant.

A call to action
¨ Donations, financial and in kind, are needed for most pressing immediate relief efforts.
¨ Thousands of people have lost their jobs or will lose their jobs as, for example, many tourists might leave the island in the next few days and weeks.
¨ Mobilizing counselors: Psychological trauma counseling needs will arise in the near future as people are trying to cope with life after the initial shock.
¨ Long-term rebuilding of vital infrastructure: sanitation, water, electricity and public services have been wiped out and need to be rebuilt. This requires a long-term financial commitment beyond the initial clean-up and first response effort.

Destruction in The Coastal areas

Sri Lanka’s coastal areas were the hardest hit. The most affected are the poorest of the poor who live very close to the beach, often sandwiched in-between the sand and the train tracks or road. The proximity to the waterline and the vulnerability of their wooden huts left thousands of people dead and 1 million homeless without access to even the most basic necessities. Although exact numbers are not available yet, women and children are bearing the brunt of the disaster.

The Eastern, North-eastern and Southern side of the island were the most affected, especially the populated area around the city of Jaffna. Many areas on the Eastern Coast are very remote and inaccessible and information is scarce. The cities of Matara, Hambantota and Galle on the Western side were very heavily affected as well. Coastal roads and train lines have been destroyed and it is currently virtually impossible to physically reach the most affected areas. The road to Galle has been closed some 80km south of Colombo.

The IMMEDIATE NEEDS

Getting to the affected areas is still the biggest challenge. Collecting bodies and cremating or burying them is crucial to avoid further health problems.

Sarvodaya’s response:

Sarvodaya’s reputation makes them the prime partner for foreign aid and donor agencies to disperse relief funds and makes Sarvodaya an important partner in the current disaster response efforts.

As soon as the news of the disaster reached the Sarvodaya headquarters on Sunday morning December 26, the special disaster management unit began to receive reports from the Sarvodaya district offices in the affected areas.

For many years Sarvodaya has experience responding to natural disasters like floods, droughts and landslides. Sarvodaya has the infrastructure to deal with disasters of this nature although nothing of this magnitude has been seen in Sri Lanka before. With its unique structure of 35 district coordinators and 360 divisional coordinators it is very well connected to the grass roots. Sarvodaya’s reputation in the community makes them a trusted partner in its outreach activities.

In addition Sarvodaya can draw on and mobilize over 100,000 volunteers from Shanti Shena, the “peace brigade”. Shanti Shena has trained young people between 18 to 30 years of age to deliver first aid to villages and organize the “village to village heart to heart” peace dialogue.

WHAT HAS been done so far:

Dr. Ariyaratne and other officials met in the afternoon of December 26 and decided to establish two disaster relief centres in the Colombo area. One is at the Sarvodaya Nagarodaya Centre and the other is in Moratuwa at Sarvodaya headquarters.

Sarvodaya field offices provide vital feedback about the scope of the disaster and the immediate needs in their community. Relief and first response efforts are coordinated here around the clock, having started around 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 26.

· A team of senior Sarvodaya staff and volunteers have been sent to affected districts, such as Matara, Galle, Hambantota, Batticloa immediately. Their role is to provide assistance to the district coordinators as they respond to their communities’ most basic needs. The necessary instructions have been given to make sure the district offices are empowered to do what is needed.

· District Linking Plan: An immediate, concrete action plan based on each communities particular needs has been implemented, including the removing of dead bodies or assisting in health posts and hospitals.

· Collecting donations: Sarvodaya is collecting clothes, food, and other goods. Community support keeps coming in at all times from the larger Colombo urban area. Medical supplies are collected and sent to places where they are most needed.

· The business community and professional associations, like the medical community, are also stepping up to the challenge and have offered direct help through the Sarvodaya network structure.

· Larger national and international relief organizations are in the process of finalizing their arrangements for support through Sarvodaya.

· Medical emergency help: Immediate response teams have been sent to the affected districts by car where it is safe to drive.

· Medical students and first aid volunteers are providing immediate relief at emergency shelters in the Moratuwa area.

· 50 medical doctors have joined the effort organized from here.

· In Moratuwa alone there are some 3000 people reported to be displaced and have sought shelter in temples and churches. They have been provided with immediate food, relief and water as much as possible.

· There are hundreds of Sarvodaya villages in each district directly affected by the tsunami. They expect some form of direct, fast and immediate assistance from Sarvodaya in the time of need. Sarvodaya villages not directly affected want to help those in other Sarvodaya villages as well as neighbouring communities not a part of Sarvodaya.

The Burmese islands and coastline around the Andaman Sea is just slightly north of the Thai resort of Phuket, which was devastated. In that area of Burma, a unique seafaring people known as the Sea Gypsies have lived simple lives dependent on fishing for centuries. Their lives will never be the same.

The Foundation for the People of Burma, a U.S. based nonprofit which provides humanitarian aid to Burmese refugees and people within the Burmese borders, asks your help. The first wave of the tsunami hit the Pondichery and Tamil Nadu coast at 8 am on December 26. Seven thousand people died on the spot.

By 9.30 am, a team from Auroville, the international township inspired by the Mother and Sri Aurobindo, and which is situated near Pondichery, swung into action. Maybank Group today pledged RM1 million to those affected by the recent Tsunami disaster. Of this contribution, a total of RM800,000 will be channelled to the Malaysian National Disaster Management and Relief Committee. The remaining RM200,000 will be donated to the Indonesian government's Tabung Bencana Tsunami Indonesia.

In collaboration with The Star, Maybank is also offering convenient channels for those who wish to contribute to victims of the Tsunami disaster that affected parts of West Malaysia. Forensic experts in race against time, call for help

Dr.Pornthip Rojanasuand and a team of Forensic experts from the Central Forensic Institute in Bangkok are racing against time in collecting DNA/hair samples of unidentified bodies before burial or cremation. She has vowed to not let a single body be cremated or buried without proper DNA collection for further identification.

The sheer number of bodies in various states of decay have made their task all but impossible. The team has issued calls for help to forensic specialists from outside the country. So far, a team of specialists from the United Kingdom has answered the call for help.

Got the following email from a friend in Jakarta:

In Jakarta, Indonesia community efforts are underway to help the
people in the Aceh region. The parents of my children's K-12 school
are part of an emergency relief hub in Jakarta, providing food,
clothing etc for the people in Aceh and Sumatra. Coming from different
walks of life, people joined forces together to help, much faster than
what the government can do by itself.

sms messages and emails continue to flow sharing the progress, as well
as the frustrations, on handling a disaster on a grand scale like
this.

On a national scale, we have problem as distribution of relief to some
of the affected parts are impossible for the moment due to impossible
land conditions.

as of today dec 28 2004 the death toll in South Asia has exceeded
more than 10.000, Aceh and Sumatra alone accounted for 4000+ of this.

I just heard that another quake happened and things can get worse still.

We severely need bodybag in large quantities. As a country with
predominantly muslim adherents, the religious law dictates that the
deceased be bathed, cleansed, clothed, prayed and then buried within
24 hours time after the time of death. Normally the deceased is
wrapped in long white burial cloth.

This will prove as a daunting task in the days ahead. Last 24 hours
I've received so many stories abound from Indonesian companies having
branch offices in the region, they need to bury their employees, yet
to enter their office compound volunteers have to walk through sea of
corpses. Even finding volunteers to carry the dead and prepare the
burial is already an arduous task.

Given the circumstances, to wrap the deceased in the ritual burial
cloth is both difficult and impractical. Problem is Indonesia do not
produce body bags, and we don't even normally use body bags for
non-natural deaths (e.g. accident, homicide etc) . Throughout Jakarta
for instance, it is difficult to find enough bodybag to fly to
Sumatra. So many relief workers from many organisation are now faced
with the fact that we have too much corpse, too little time, and very
few bodybags.

Imagine the backlog of burials in the following days or weeks. Picture
how a simple item like bodybag will help contain possible epidemic due
to the decomposition of corpses.

Similar situation will happen not only in Indonesia,but it will also
happen for other nations that are hit the worst - Sri Lanka, India,
Thailand come into miy mind.

Any international help to provide body bags to help bury the dead will
be highly appreciated - along with other help for the living such as
medication, ready-to-eat food, clothing, medication, etc.

Please info this to your country relief effort for South Asia disaster.

An update on the tsunami condition which also affects Singapore: 183 Singaporeans are still uncontactable in crisis hit areas as at 5pm on Wednesday 29/12.

AT 5pm on Wednesday, there are still 183 Singaporeans who remain uncontactable , the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday. The number of uncontactable Singaporeans on Tuesday was 300.

The MFA and its overseas missions are continuing efforts to locate Singaporeans reported missing or remain uncontactable in the areas affected by the tsunamis.

Two Singaporeans have died in Phuket and one in Sri Lanka.

The SCDF has sent a Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team to Medan and to Phuket. They will assist the local authorities in their search and rescue efforts.

In addition, in Singapore, Buddhist Fellowship's Firefly Mission is arranging a team of volunteers to assist in the education of victims on hygiene, precautions and dispension of aid.Trip likely to be held in first weekend of Jan, to be confirmed.

Banks DBS Singapore and OCBC Singapore also allow their customers to contribute directly to the funds.

Singapore's supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice will be selling ration tickets at $10 from next week at all its stores. For every ration ticket purchased by customers, $13 worth of necessities like biscuits, noodles etc will be contributed for the needy affected by the tsunami.

This is an update at 840 pm on 29.12.2004.
I just talked to our team at both Nagapattinam and Cuddalore.

a. Clothes: NO CLOTHES. They are saying there are enough clothes. In fact there is a glut. Only if there are relatively new clothes etc., then we could think of sending. In spite of the precautions mentioned, lot of torn clothes have been collected and also not segregated so they are finding it difficult to manage the distribution there.

b. Food is needed. According to the classified list that we have sent earlier. Greater demand is for the milk powder.

c. Utensils are really badly needed. SO WE NEED TO COLLECT THESE AND A TRUCK WOULD BE LEAVING FOR BOTH CUDDALORE AND NAGAPATTINAM before 12 noon. So pls. coordinate with me, Saurabh 93425 43982 and Aradhana ( 98455 37269)

d. Medicines are needed. Lot of people called Priya that they would give the medicines to her but till this update not many people have given the same. We had to buy the medicines and sed it for now. If anybody is thinking of buying medicines pls. get in touch with me I have got a People's Health Movement organisation called as Locost which manufactures generic drugs ethically and are ready to help us out with this.

f. Volunteers: Things are slightly calming down, so they say they are able to get volunteers from the local public themselves for distribution etc., But we have started thinking of middle and long term measures in which there would be a survey done as to the actual needs of the people and then concentrating on holistic development. For this we might need a lot of volunteers who are able to commit some time. We would keep sending out updates on this, so keep watching. Actually for the mentally tough ones if somebody is really wanting to go then there is a need to remove dead bodies. So if some of you are ready for that then pls. get in touch with Nitin before leaving the place.

g. One more great development has been that Fabmall ( thanks to Arundhati and Rajesh) has offered to host the materials collected by us at their various godowns in the city. I would request all of you to pls. keep the collected material (utensils, blankets and food) . Can all of you deliver it to the nearest Fabmall by 12 NOON tomorrow so that a truck can leave by 1 pm.

The Pondicherry Government has sought a massive financial assistance of over 300 crore rupees to help rehabilitate the Tsunami affected people of Pondicherry and Karaikal. With more bodies being recovered from the sandy beaches and marshy bushes of Karaikal the toll has crossed 500 with Karaikal reporting 406. Mass burial of 300 dead bodies has been held so far and 50 bodies have remained unidentified.

Over a 100 people were killed in Pondicherry and Karaikal region of the Union Territory following tidal waves sweeping into the fishermen hamlets, Chief Minister N Rangasamy said today.

Talking to reporters at the helipad here before he left for Karaikal, he said while 42 people were killed in Pondicherry region, 60 had died in the Karaikal region. He was yet to get the toll from Yanam region of the Union Territory, which also bore the brunt of the waves.

Besides the victims, hundreds of people were injured and 130 admitted to different hospitals here.

Thousands of huts were washed away by the tidal waves and the destruction was devastating in Karaikal region, he added.

Mr Rangasamy said all the deaths were due to the tidal waves and not due to the impact of the tremor. It was an unexpected calamity and the relief measures were being taken up in full swing, he added.

All the affected were being shifted to safer places and police directed to evacuate all those residing in the coastal areas before this evening as a precautionary measure in the wake of the possibility of recurrence, he said.

The Chief Minister said he had apprised the Prime Minister and Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who was likely to visit Pondicherry tomorrow, about the calamity.

Later, along with Lt Governor M M Lakhera, Education Minister K Lakshminarayanan and Development Commissioner B V Selvaraj, Mr Rangasamy left for the Karaikal region.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Sunil Garg told newspersons that the disaster management cell of the police department was put into service and all police personnel were on duty today. Evacuation of the people from the coastal areas was underway, he said, adding that a control room had also been opened for any emergency.

The South-East Asia Earthquake and Tsunami

Aceh in Indonesia, the stretch closest to the quake's epicenter, is possibly the worst affected amongst all and is now reporting over 35,000 dead and thousands more missing.

All the more ironic that the land most devastated, is now the least approachable.

The province of Aceh has been largely inaccessible to the world over the past few years due to a raging civil war and stringent government restrictions on foreigners including aid workers and journalists. However, as the unimaginable scale of the disaster is becoming clear, the mass of red tape is being loosened and humanitarian agencies are being allowed to move in. Making aid doubly difficult is the hostile terrain, which still has massive stretches of coastline buried in mud and water, thus cutting off roads, radio and all kinds of communication.

All aid is thus only through government bodies, relief agencies, NGOs and other corporates. I realize there is little knowledge of who is to be contacted and how donations can be made, so I have listed here some details obtained from local ministries and news agencies.

It is difficult to make sense of the morbid abstracts which emerge from a tragedy so real -- millions displaced, thousands dead, hundreds missing. Soon these numbers will numb us and even a doubling of these figures wont be anything more than a mere statistic for most of us. The danger we face is in losing touch with the goodness of our hearts, for sympathy is a myopic emotion, not to mention highly treacherous. As severe as it is in the initial thrust, its grip only grows feeble with the passing of time.

Help Needed for Displaced Indian Fishermen

As the deadly tsunami waves cross the South East and West shores of India more than 5,000 people are feared dead and thousands others displaced according to official sources.

According to news reports Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Tamil Nadu are the worst affected. In Tamil Nadu more than 2,400 people are reported dead while 3000 people have been killed in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Some unofficial sources have put the toll here to 10 000.

In Pondicherry, at least a 100 people are dead while 89 casualties have been reported from Andhra Pradesh. The toll in Kerala has touched 128.

Villages have been swept away leaving hundreds and thousands of people homeless.
Poor fishing communities are the worst affected. Those who escaped with their lives
have been left destitute by the lashing floods, which carried off their meagre
possessions. "As the waters retreated, bodies were left strewn across beaches,
among smashed boats, tangled nets and the remains of fishermen's shacks.
Among the dead was a group of 40 children who were playing cricket on the
beach when a giant wave swept them out to sea," reported The Telegraph.

Relief and rescue efforts are yet to reach many far-flunged areas of
Andaman & Nicobar.

Moreover the Meteorological office in Thiruvananthapuram has warned that fresh
tsunamis may develop and there is possibility of high tides in coastal areas of
Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

In this context Centre for Education and Communication (CEC), Jagori,
Other Media and Delhi Forum are calling a meeting on December 28,
2004 at 2.30 pm at Gandhi Peace Foundation, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg,
New Delhi. The meeting will discuss how could we provide support from Delhi.
Meanwhile the affected organization working in the affected costal areas
have requested relief.

The Bangalore Relief Drive

St. Joseph's College of Arts and Science will be the main contact point for collection of material and donations. A bank account in the name of "Citizens Initiative" is available for collecting all
donations and routing them through credible channels to the affected communities.

In a major drive to mobilise relief material and resources, the Citizens Initiative will organise a Relief Collection March on Thursday, 30 December 2004, from Mahatma Gandhi Statue on M. G. Road, starting 3.30 pm. This March will wind its way through many commercial areas to raise awareness to GIVE GENEROUSLY AND APPROPRIATELY.

Additionally, there will be a major GIVE GENEROUSLY AND APPROPRIATELY Canvassing Points set up by Volunteers in many parts of the city. By way of this Release, we request more volunteers to join these campaigns. A briefing meeting will be held for volunteers at St. Joseph's College on Wednesday, 29 December at 5.30 pm.

A series of collection points for material and donations are also set up, the details of which are given below.

1. Blankets - a few thousands
2. Medicines - list below
3. Clothes (especially childrens clothes -- 0-5 age group and 5-12 age group) are an immediate necessity.
4. Gloves & masks to help volunteers clear the debris & dead bodies.
5. Money - to buy essentials, water pots (which will be bought closer to the areas)
6. Water purification tablets
7. Baby foods and dry foods
8. Tarpaulins, sheets, and material for temporary shelter

With respect to clothing, please ensure that clothes are not torn, and are clean. They could be donated in neat wrappings, clearly describing whether it is for Boys, Girls, Men or Women and describing the age group as: Less than 1; 1-3; 4-7; 8-10; 10-15; 15-18. SAREES AND LUNGIS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED.

Food material which is ready to consume and have a long shelf life, such as biscuits, are also needed. Dal, rice, and grains are also needed. Grains should be ground into flour. Tamil Rehabilation Organization (TRO) in Sri Lanka has appealed for aid help urgently for providing food, medical help, transport, temporary shelters and other urgent humanitarian assistance for the hundreds of thousands of the displaced people in Sri Lanka. Even as senior political leaders continue to visit the tsunami-affected areas, villages just a few kilometers from their itineraries are being totally ignored by government officials.

In such villages, which are off the maps of VIP visits, there is a danger of breakout of diseases.Angry voices greet visitors at Nagore, a village 10 km from the coastal town of Nagappatinam. T

his area is among the worst-affected by Sunday's earthquake-induced sea waves - the death toll in the area has been put at 2,300.

"For three days no one bothered to come here. Not even the collector or any government officials. How can we manage on our own?" said a resident of the area.

Death and destruction

Walking into the village, one encounters the sight of women crying out in despair amid the unbearable stench of death and destruction.Everywhere there are signs of the same devastation.

Villagers carried away a box with the body of a one-year-old baby – in a disfigured and decayed state.Three days after the disaster, Nagore is still strewn with bodies that are waiting to be picked up. Armed with masks, the local people are trying to separate the dead bodies that are mingled with the dead fish on the shore.

Just few metres away, children were scraping a coconut – their meal of the day.

Trying times

And while there is water everywhere, there is hardly a drop to drink. A man was seen washing his hands in a pond that had a dead animal in it. "There is no water in the village. Some volunteers brought us water but even they have run out of supplies," said a woman. Away from the villages, many have sought shelter in the local dargah.

Places like Nagore are in desperate need of help.The survivors of Sunday's tsunamis, who are now crowded into community shelters, need not just food, water and medicines.They also need volunteers to assist them in going back to their villages to clear the deadly debris that are lying unattended. And could cause a potential epidemic.

Employees of the Power Grid Corporation of India are supporting relief measures of the authorities. R. P. Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, announced a contribution of Rs. 45 lakhs to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and said the local units in States were arranging distribution of food and clothes.
